Pitching staff key part of ‘Canes success

October 9, 2018

The Holland Hurricanes men’s baseball team capped off their regular season with a perfect 10-0 record, a record that will help lead the surge as they prepare to attend the 2018 Canadian Collegiate Baseball Championship in Toronto, ON, October 25-28, hosted by the Humber College Hawks.

Usually in baseball we applaud home runs or the number of runs scored, but this season, head coach Andrew MacNevin is a firm believer that “good pitching predominately beats good hitting, and in the post-season, this certainly holds true”.

MacNevin credits his coaching staff, and a highly competitive pitching roster, for aiding in his team’s success so far this season.

“We feel our pitching staff is one of our biggest strengths and the fact that all our pitchers have such a high compete level is key to be successful at the National Championship.  We’re very lucky to have a strong coaching staff as well.  They’ve been using video review at practice to aid in player development and the results have been very positive.”

Tyler Johnston and Ryan Abraham, who both have a record 3-0 this season and an ERA of 0.47 and 2.69 respectively, mirror the words of MacNevin, praising the coaching staff for preparing the players as well as giving credit to great defense.

“Between having a coaching staff that would be envied by any team we play, and a defense of the same caliber, it makes it really easy to focus on one pitch at a time,” says Johnston.  “As a staff, I think we are going to be peaking at just the right time at Nationals.”

Abraham was not short of praise either.

“Heading into nationals I believe our pitching staff will keep us in every game, allowing our offense to hit freely.”

If one thing could be said about the Hurricanes, it’s that they are confident in their abilities, however, everyone understands there’s still work to be done and adjustments to be made.

“I feel like the pitching staff and I threw some of the best games of our lives this season, but of course, we all have room for improvement” said first-year pitcher Chandler Laporte.

Cardigan, PEI native, Charles MacLellan elaborated, saying, “Our pitching staff showed a lot of heart this season with the help of first-class coaching. We still have plenty of work to do

in the weeks leading up to nationals, but with focus and determination we have a great opportunity at doing well this fall.”

With great momentum heading into the national championship, the Hurricanes will look to sharpen their tools and bring the same success to the mound as they prepare to return to action for the 2018 Canadian Collegiate Baseball Championship in Toronto, ON, October 25-28, hosted by the Humber College Hawks.

As the team continues to prepare for the national championship, they are inviting all minor baseball players to a free camp on Saturday, October 13 at Memorial Field at Victoria Park.  The camp takes place from 12-2pm and is open to all PEI minor baseball players. Players will play games and receive instruction from the Hurricanes players and coaching staff.
